Deck the Halls
for SATB Choir, Piano, Strings, Jingle Bells, and Optional Audience

This lively setting of the traditional Welsh carol “Nos Galan” transforms the familiar Deck the Halls into a festive concert arrangement for SATB choir, piano, string ensemble, jingle bells, and optional audience participation. Written for the Healdsburg Chorus and Healdsburg community, the arrangement is designed not only as a choral performance piece but also as an opportunity to bring singers and audience together in the celebration.

Marked Allegro ma non troppo, the work opens with an energetic instrumental texture in which rhythmic piano writing, jingle bells, and strings immediately establish its bright holiday character. The lower strings begin pizzicato while the upper strings provide active rhythmic motion, creating a buoyant foundation for the familiar tune.

The opening verse allows the choir and optional audience to share the melody, making the carol instantly accessible and communal. As the arrangement develops, the texture expands into full SATB choral writing, giving familiar verses such as “See the blazing yule before us” and “Strike the harp and join the chorus” greater harmonic and rhythmic variety. The strings move between rhythmic accompaniment and melodic reinforcement, while the jingle bells provide a continuous layer of seasonal color.

A later section marked Fast increases the momentum as the text turns to the passing of the old year and the arrival of the new. Here the audience again becomes part of the larger ensemble, while the chorus, piano, strings, and bells combine to create an increasingly expansive celebration. The familiar “fa-la-la” refrains remain central throughout, but changing textures, fuller harmonies, rhythmic contrasts, and shifts between unison and four-part writing keep each return fresh.

Joyful, energetic, and intentionally communal, Deck the Halls is especially suited to holiday concerts, community sing-alongs, and seasonal programs looking for a familiar carol presented with enough musical substance for the choir while remaining immediately engaging for an audience.
